Sum and Substance

Premium Hosta

Foliage with Flair

Immense, bold, glossy heart shaped leaves with chartreuse color up to 16" across. Leaves become golden in summer or with more light exposure. Pale - lavender flowers on 3' scapes in mid-late summer. Plants can range in height from 3-6' high and 6-10' wide. A beautiful specimen plant or interesting when used in mass or as a drift of color throughout a bed. Thick leaves resist slug damage.

General Maintenance

Maintenance:

  • For a neat apperance, remove old foliage in early winter when plants are fully dormant and before new leaves emerge.
  • Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring.

Watering & Soil:

  • Best with regular watering - weekly, or more often in extreme heat
  • Provide enriched, slightly acidic, evenly moist soil.

Fertilizing:

  • If a soil test indicates deficient nutrients, fertilize by applying general purpose fertilizer in spring as the leaves emerge and once more before flowering. Keep fertilizer granules off leaves to avoid burn.

Tips:

  • Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.
  • Very effective in groups or massed.

Development Story

Hostas are exceedingly popular perennials in today's gardens due to their versatility in the landscape. Their subtle colors, tall flower scapes, and broad, coarse leaves fill a niche in garden designs that few other plants can achieve. Hostas also grow well in city environments where the air may be polluted by car exhaust, etc.
